Steaks with 1 Smart Point Whole 30 Steak Sauce

I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for a good steak. I rarely order steak out because making it at home using this tried and true method always produces a perfectly cooked steak. However, as a Weight Watcher who aspires to eat as “clean” as possible, finding a good steak sauce is HARD. This steak sauce is bursting with flavor, which really elevates a good steak. It has NO ADDED SUGAR and is so simple to make when you’re making some steaks. As always, I’ve written the recipe to include arrowroot starch and coconut aminos because that’s what I opt for in my kitchen. You can easily sub cornstarch for the arrowroot starch and low sodium soy sauce for the coconut aminos. I’ve also included some simple instructions for cooking a medium rare steak in a cast iron skillet! This dish goes great with my Instant Pot mashed potatoes, crispy brussel sprouts, or any roasted vegetable!

 

Steaks with 1 Smart Point Whole 30 Steak Sauce

Serves 4, 1 smart point per serving for the sauce, points vary based on type of steak used

 

Ingredients

16 oz steak, I used rib eye

1 cloves garlic, minced or pressed

1 tsp olive oil

1 TB tomato paste or compliant ketchup

1/3 C coconut aminos or low sodium soy sauce

1 TB arrowroot starch or corn starch

Salt and pepper

 

Instructions

1. Pat your steaks dry with a paper towel, season both sides with salt and pepper. Allow to come close to room temperature before cooking. Combine tomato paste, coconut aminos, and arrowroot starch in a small bowl and mix together with a fork or small whisk.

2. Heat your skillet (I use cast iron) over medium high heat with either spray oil or a little olive oil, allow pan to heat up. Add steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes per side for medium rare. Use your best judgement depending on the size of your steaks! I always use the hand technique to tell how done my steaks are.

3. Once steaks have cooked to your liking, remove from pan and set aside to rest for about 5 minutes. This is important!

4. In the same pan, add 1 tsp of olive oil and the garlic. Cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, until the garlic is fragrant, but not burnt! Reduce heat to medium and add the steak sauce. Using a wooden spoon, scrape the brown bits off the bottom of the pan. Allow the sauce to come to a simmer to thicken.

5. Slice steaks against the grain and serve with steak sauce drizzled over top or on the side.
